Search
Search every file in your workspace, with case, whole-word and regex options.
Search across files
Press CtrlShiftF, or click the search icon in the activity bar. The search box is focused and ready to type.
- Results appear as you type, once your query has at least 2 characters. Press Enter to search at once.
- Results are grouped by file, with the number of matches in each. Click a file's header to fold or unfold it.
- Click a match to open the file at that line.
- Up to 500 matches are listed; the summary says when there are more. Narrow the query to see the rest.
Search options
| Button | Option | Example |
|---|---|---|
Aa | Match Case | With it on, User no longer matches user. |
ab | Match Whole Word | id matches id but not userId. |
.* | Use Regular Expression | fetch\(.*api finds every fetch call to an API path. |
Toggling an option re-runs the search straight away.
Find a file by name
To jump to a file rather than search its contents, use Go to File with CtrlP and type part of its name or folder.
Search inside the open file
Inside the editor, CtrlF finds text in the current file and CtrlH finds and replaces, as in VS Code.
Ask instead of searching
When you don't know what to search for (“where do we validate passwords?”), ask the AI assistant. It searches the project by meaning and by symbol, not just by text. See Codebase indexing.
