MCP servers

Connect issue trackers, databases, docs and other tools to the assistant.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets the assistant use tools from other programs: GitHub or Jira issues, a database, documentation search, a browser, and many more. Each MCP server you connect adds its tools to the assistant.

Add a server

  1. Open AI settings (⚙ or /settings) → MCP servers → Edit mcp.json. The first time, Lamied creates the file with a disabled example.
  2. Add your servers under mcpServers, in the same format other MCP clients use.
  3. Save the file and click Restart servers.

Each server then shows its state (Connected, Connecting…, Error or Disabled), the tools it provides, and which tools run without asking.

  "mcpServers": {

      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-github"],
      "env": { "GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN": "<your token>" },
      "autoApprove": ["search_issues", "get_issue"]

Fields

FieldMeaning
commandA server that runs on your computer, started with this program.
argsArguments for the command.
envEnvironment variables for it, such as tokens. It gets only these plus basics like PATH and HOME.
cwdFolder to start it in. Defaults to your home folder.
urlA remote server, reached over HTTP.
headersHTTP headers for a remote server, such as Authorization.
autoApproveTool names (as the server names them) that run without asking you.
disabledtrue keeps the entry without starting it.

Each server needs exactly one of command or url. Server names can use letters, digits, - and _, up to 32 characters.

Approvals

  • Every MCP tool call shows a card with the server, the tool and its full arguments, and waits for you, unless the tool is listed in autoApprove.
  • “Allow commands without asking” never approves MCP calls.
  • MCP calls count as changes, so a checkpoint is saved first and Plan Mode asks before them.

Limits

  • At most 64 tools can be offered to the model at once, and the built-in tools use about 23. Extra MCP tools are dropped, and settings says so, so disable servers you don't need.
  • Results are capped at 100,000 characters, and a call times out after 5 minutes.
  • Servers start with the first AI task after Lamied opens, or when you click Restart servers.
  • Remote servers that need a browser sign-in (OAuth) aren't supported yet. Put a token in headers instead.
  • Helper agents don't get MCP tools.
